The wrap-up
I’m pretty sure this will be one of my final post. Outside of blogging for class, I really did not find it to be too much fun. It’s funny because I can see who visits my blog or when someone does but when they don’t leave comments, it sort of creeps me out.
At any rate, I can say that though this class had a few boring moments, I enjoyed it for the most part. I definitely learned some new methods and techniques. It was also cool having different things inserted into the teaching because lectures can be pretty boring. So things like interviewing David using Skype and the films and the fact that Professor Thieke came in with some real-life experience really helped. I think more than anything I was impressed with Professor Thieke giving personal stories and examples. It helps put things into perspective when the person standing in front of you knows what they’re talking about and can say,” I remember the time…:” or “This actually happened to me…”

Even Closer
Graduation is getting even closer and I can hardly wait. Mentally, I’ve already checked out but I’m trying to hold on for these last few weeks. In other, more personal news, Friday April 18 has been confirmed as the adoption date for my little brother. This is the day our family goes to court and makes it official. Though little AJ has been with us since he was born ( he’s 2 now), it will finally be official!

But where from here…?
So it only took 4 years for me to figure out what I’d like to do as a “grown-up”. My goal is to become an event coordinator in a hotel. I’m also interested in corporate management in the hospitality industry. So now the question is, “What do I do now?”. I’ll be graduating in just over a month and I haven’t landed the perfect job yet. Truth is, I don’t really mind. I like what I’m doing now and I know that opportunities both exist now and will appear in the future as well. Graduate school is a definite ( if only for Dad’s sake) but I’m putting that off for a year or two. Right now, I’d like to work, save a little money, and travel. Now seems like the perfect time to do so. After all, I’m a sprigtly 21 year-old man. I’ve got my whole life ahead of me (fingers crossed)…

An Update
I’ve discovered some new blogs. I think I may be able to get into this stuff. These were pretty funny.
1. Stuff Educated Black People Like – It’s pretty funny and self explanatory. I definitely see myself all over this website. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or bad thing though. I’m going to say good…

Week 3
This week, we’re continuing with “The Tipping Point” by Malcom Gladwell. The author attempts to identify how and why certain trends, ideas, etc. are sparked and then spread. An example Gladwell gives in his introduction is how Hushpuppies increased in popularity almost overnight thanks to a few trendsetters.
In chapter 3, Gladwell introduces the concept of “stickiness”. Stickiness is the one special quality that makes the idea or trend stick out in peoples minds. The Power of Context discussed in chapter 4 discusses how if the context isn’t right, then ‘tipping’ won’t occur. The timing, environment, and other factors all need to be correct. Chapter 5 continues the discussion of the Power of Context.
Countering Gladwell is Duncan Watts. In an interview with Fast Company, Watts argues the concept of what Gladwell refers to as “Influentials”. These are the people who hold the most influence in society. According to Gladwell, their views are important and have a great affect on the public. Watts argues that while they are important, they don’t have as much power as Gladwell gives them.
Ultimately, Watts says the best way to market a project is to mass market it, something that Gladwell would probably object to.

Week 2
This week in “The New Rules”, the author talked about the power of blogs. So many people can be exposed to your message in a short period of time. A simple blog post can travel from blog to blog, be commented on, and create a frenzy. So, it can be an important tool for marketers and advertisers.

Week 1
In the first week we discussed how the public relations industry has grown. New, innovative methods have been introduced that allow for quicker and easier access to media and information. Of huge importance is the internet, which can be used to engage the customer as well as allow for 2-sided messages.
